When it comes to emergencies, it helps to have a Jedi on your side. A new Lanterman and Friends animated video series shares tips on how to prepare and stay safe.
The series is part of the Lanterman and Friends project created by the regional centers, which uses short, animated videos to explain services, rights, and other topics for the developmental disability community.
The 10-episode Emergency Preparedness series (five episodes for individuals, and five episodes for service providers) shares simple safety and preparedness tips about earthquakes, wildfires, home fires, evacuations and other emergencies.
The English-version of the videos feature Mark Hamill, known for playing Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars,” as the voice of the superhero Lanterman.
“When I read these scripts, I thought, ‘How can I not do this?’ I wish I had these before the fires,” said Hamill. Watch his full interview above.
“Breaking Bad” actor and disability advocate RJ Mitte also returns as the character Lorenzo. Several voice actors in the series have lived experience with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The videos are free to watch and were developed in collaboration with regional center emergency coordinators. They’re available in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language, with more languages coming soon.
The Lanterman and Friends project has other topics too, including an award-winning series about home- and community-based services:
